This paired lecture explores translation as a privileged site where rupture and continuity intersect in the transmission of German-Jewish thought into the French intellectual landscape.

In her lecture “Styles of Concrete Existence: Levinas translating Rosenzweig into a French Idiom", Sarah Hammerschlag will consider Levinas's presentation at the second meeting of the Colloque des intellectuels juifs de langue française on Rosenzweig and the function it served in setting up the importance of religion as a category in his thought.

In “The French reception of German and German-Jewish thinking on Translation: Antoine Berman and Jacques Derrida", Cedric Cohen-Skalli will reconstruct the intellectual and historical context in which German and German-Jewish thinking on translation (from German classicism and Romanticism to Benjamin and Rosenzweig) reappeared in 1980s and 1990s France through the seminal work of Antoine Berman and Derrida's famous essay Des tours de Babel (1980).
