Censorship in Restoration Age. Between Bologna and Rome (1815-1828)

The present Ph.D. research focuses on the functioning of the Bolognese censorship in the Restoration Age, particularly in the years between 1815 and 1828. As a matter of fact, in current historiography, there is a complete lack of a punctual study that enables to reconstruct the structure and activity of  the print censorship of the second most important city of the Papal State in this specific historical period. To this end, the first chapter will focus on the censorship in Bologna through the presentation of numerous unpublished case studies that will shed light on the internal structure and relational network between the various authorities in charge of it. From the second to the fifth chapter, the focus will be on the Roman trials to which a multitude of prints, mainly books, were subjected, denounced by the Bolognese authorities either to the Congregation of the Index, or to that of the Holy Office.

Zensur im Zeitalter der Restauration zwischen Bologna und Rom (1815-1828)

Das vorliegende Promotionsprojekt befasst sich mit der Funktionsweise der Bologneser Zensur in der Restaurationszeit, insbesondere in den Jahren zwischen 1815 und 1828. In der gegenwärtigen Geschichtsschreibung fehlt eine punktuelle Studie, die es ermöglicht, die Struktur und die Tätigkeit der Druckzensur in der zweitwichtigsten Stadt des Kirchenstaates in diesem spezifischen historischen Zeitraum zu rekonstruieren. Zu diesem Zweck wird sich das erste Kapitel auf die Zensur in Bologna konzentrieren, indem zahlreiche unveröffentlichte Fallstudien vorgestellt werden, die die interne Struktur und das Beziehungsgeflecht zwischen den verschiedenen verantwortlichen Behörden beleuchten. Vom zweiten bis zum fünften Kapitel liegt der Schwerpunkt auf den römischen Prozessen, denen eine Vielzahl von Drucken, vor allem Bücher, unterworfen wurden, die von den Bologneser Behörden entweder bei der Indexkongregation oder beim Heiligen Offizium denunziert wurden.
